SICILIA

Joseph Sicilia never ran out of stories he was eager to share.

He died at age 91 on Dec. 20, 2023, one week following a fall at his Bensalem home for nearly 40 years.

He was the son of the late Lena and Joseph Sicilia, of Philadelphia, He was preceded in death by his siblings Anthony and Sylvester, of Philadelphia, and Mary Clements, of Bensalem.

He graduated from North Catholic High School and had a long career with the U.S. Postal Service. He spent his retirement years visiting cemeteries to plant American flags on the graves of military veterans, and cooking his famous chicken soup, chili and Polpette. He was also a longtime member of the Thursday boys club at the Neshaminy Mall.

Joe loved talking about his travels to every U.S. state, Mexico and his beloved Italy. A frequent topic was his childhood as the youngest son of Italian immigrants in Frankford, Philadelphia.

He talked about how he and his friends knocked on doors and asked to see neighbors’ Christmas trees. The time his mother asked him to stay home from school to keep her company.

He’d tell you about the way he convinced his protective mom to let him spend the summer of high school graduation working as a busboy in Wildwood, and how he could have been a famous Hollywood comedian.

But fame and money wasn’t important to Joe.

His family was, particularly, his late nephew James “Jimmy” Clement, who frequently was mentioned in his stories. To honor his memory, Joe created the James Clement Memorial Scholarship, which will provide two scholarships annually to incoming freshmen seeking a Catholic high school education.

He is survived by nieces Janet Heisler, of South Carolina, Jane Cochran, of Philadelphia, Linda Shanice of New Jersey, and nephew Fred Sicilia, of New Jersey, and cousins Joann Ciavaglia, of Bensalem, Tina Scannapieco, of Wayne, and Carmen Buffone and his wife Danielle..

Friends and Family are invited to call Thursday, January 4, from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. Charles Barromeo Roman Catholic Church at Bristol Pike and Hulmeville Road in Bensalem, followed immediately by a funeral Mass. Interment will follow at St. Dominic Cemetery in Philadelphia.

VISCO

Rita D. Visco, a beloved wife, mother, and businesswoman, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 29, 2023, in Philadelphia, the city of her birth and where she left an indelible mark on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was born on January 6, 1931.

Rita was a woman of many talents and accomplishments. Graduating from Little Flower High School in the class of 1948, she had to balance her education with her summer job on farms in New Jersey. Her strong work ethic shone through even in her formative years as she tirelessly picked tomatoes on those sunny days.

After completing her education, Rita put her skills to work as a housemaker, immersing herself in the joys of creating a loving home for her family. Her prowess in the kitchen was legendary, and she became renowned as the greatest Italian cook among all who sat at her table. Sunday dinners were a cherished tradition for Rita's loved ones, where homemade pasta and delectable dishes filled their hearts and nourished their souls. And it wasn't just about the food; it was about family gatherings that became routine—a time for brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, and uncles to come together and revel in each other's company.

Rita's contributions extended beyond the confines of her home as well. She stood side by side with her husband as his business partner and bookkeeper before assuming sole responsibility for their family real estate business. She possessed a deep capacity for love that extended not only to her immediate family but also to friends and guests who were always welcomed with open arms into her warm embrace. She was caring and kind-hearted, always going the extra mile to ensure that everyone around her felt valued and cherished. Rita's social nature thrived in entertaining others, and she took great pleasure in hosting unforgettable evenings filled with laughter, joy, and delectable treats for all.

Beyond her domestic and professional accomplishments, Rita found solace and fulfillment in various hobbies and interests. She enjoyed the simple pleasure of shopping, finding delight in discovering treasures that would bring joy to others. Crocheting allowed her to express her creativity, weaving intricate patterns that showcased her talent and dedication. As life progressed, Rita embarked on travels that widened her horizons and enriched her spirit. And as technology evolved, she found solace in playing computer card games and engaging in traditional card games with friends. Her involvement in social clubs further highlighted her sociability and exemplified the genuine connections she forged throughout her life.

Raising five boys was undoubtedly one of Rita's proudest accomplishments. She embraced the roles of mother and homemaker wholeheartedly, instilling in them values of love, respect, and perseverance. Her dedication reverberates through the lives of Michael Visco (Mary), Dr. David Visco, MD (Maritta), and their families. JOHN CAIN

His Life Story

On May 31, 2023, with wife by his bedside, John was called on by his lord and savior. His final days were spent with sharing favorite photos and making sure his house was in order which emphasized feeding the cat, fish, and plants.

John was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 14, 1968, to Martina Cain and the late John L. Howell Jr. John was the only child to Martina Cain. He is now reunited in the presence of The Lord with his father. John was blessed in life with nineteen other siblings from his father.

John was famously known as “Johnny” to family members and “JC” growing up in South Philly. John received his education in the Philadelphia public school system, where he attended Bok Vocational High School and earned some college credits at Peirce College. Trying to figure out the right career path, John enlisted into the United States Army and later received an entry-level separation (ELS) in 1989. Fortunately, John found something he enjoyed doing at Frank’s Seafood. John worked at Frank’s as a cook for 10 years, Super fresh as a seafood clerk for 6 years, and Fernwood Mens Shelter as a Program Supervisor for 17 years.

John was the first black board member at Frankford Boy’s Club in 2001. He also joined the Board of Directors at Max Myers Recreational Center and coached girls’ basketball in 2003.  John was a very active community leader and contributor. He coached multiple sports from 2001 – 2009. John was a compassionate couch that went above and beyond for players. John made sure kids had appropriate playing shoes to wear even if he had to buy them. He never turned anyone away. His love for sports as a child motivated him to be a great and successful mentor for children.

John was an ambitious individual who achieved a lot of things in his life. John was very excited when he received his governor’s pardon in 2021, which led him to pursue his license to carry firearms in 2022. Hence, John played and danced to his favorite song “license to kill” by Gladys Knight after getting his picture ID. Then, John purchased his first home in 2022. Above all, John managed to get his son's student loan discharged before he died. Nevertheless, he left his wife with getting his credit repaired.

John enjoyed collecting coins, knives, beer signs, sports jerseys, and globes. His favorite place to eat was the Chinese buffet and vacation spot was Cancun, Mexico. John was known for making exceptional seafood salads. He loved to cook these distinctive dishes for his family and friends at every events. John liked watching YouTube videos, listening to music, smoking cigarettes in his man cave. John was notorious for not answering his phone and not returning calls like people wanted him to… Therefore, you had to call his wife to get to him. John had a charismatic personality that made it easy for people to engage. Above all, he was a devoted husband, loving son, wonderful father, and grandpop who loved spending time with his grandkids.

John’s life was cherished by many. He leaves to mourn: his three children, Brandon Cain, John Cain and Anitra Cain; God Daughter, Kyndra Patterson; Daughter-in-law, Marshaa Cain Grandchildren, Michaela Cain, Matthew Cain, Mila Cain, Gabriel Williams, Mia’Nicole Cain, and Brandon Cain Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and best friend Louis Patterson.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing and funeral Thursday, June 8, 2023 beginning at 10am at the NUlty FuneralHome, 2614 Orthodox St., Phila., PA 19137. Parking on premises. Funeral Services will begin at 12 noon. Interment will be held privately.

It is very hard to lose people you thought would never leave. However, you will be okay because you have no choice. When we lose people we love, we must find a way to keep going for the people we have and hold dearly.

Sorrowfully Submitted, The Family

ALESSIO

Dolores Alessio (nee: Neisser), 93, of Philadelphia, PA was called home Monday April 24, 2023.Born on 12/27/1929 to Joseph and Agnes Neisser (nee: Campbell). The youngest of eight children, Dolores grew up in the Greater Kensington area, attending Stetson Junior High, followed by Kensington High School where she was shortstop for the Varsity softball team and spent 1 semester assisting at the millinery shop of Lit Brothers.

After a “meet-cute” encounter at her local luncheonette, she would go on to marry Faust Alessio from the Frankford neighborhood and together they ran their own luncheonette and pizzeria in Tioga for almost 30 years. Tiny’s was a beloved neighborhood spot, where many of our loved ones met their spouses, growing our extended family and thereby the wonderful family memories as well.

Losing her beloved husband in 1978, Dolores continued to run the business they’d built together for a time, later choosing a better life balance for her children and herself. Belts tightened, she forged on to overcome each challenge as it presented itself, making sacrifices along the way to provide all she could to her loved ones. She was a true living role model for her family.

Dolores was an active member of her congregation at Mater Dolorosa R.C. Church, before its closure, but her most proud accomplishments are centered in her unending love and support of her family, immediate & extended alike, as well as friends & neighbors. Whether it be teaching a child to throw a ball, helping someone getting to and from a doctor’s appointment, or simply supporting a loved one at any life event (large or small), there was little she could find more joyful than being of use to someone else.

Dolores is preceded in death by her husband, Faust, son Christopher, daughter Maria, beloved Brenna, her siblings: Joseph, Frank, Cecilia, Jack, Gus (Catherine), Margaret, and Leonard, her In-laws: Rose (Frank), Gilda (Tony), Silvio (Joan), Olivio (known to many as Sam), and Babe as well as too many beloved nieces & nephews whom she and the family lost much too soon.

Dolores is survived by her daughter Theresa, Daughter-in-law Toni, grandchildren Michael (Danielle), Christina, Stephanie, Great-grandchildren Austin and Lucas, Sister-in-law Evelyn, as well as many beloved nieces & nephews, great-nieces & nephews, and great-great nieces & nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing and funeral Tuesday, May 2, 2023 beginning at 9am in Holy Innocents Church, L street and E. Hunting Park Ave., Phila., PA 19124. Her funeral mass will begin at 10:30am. Interment Our Lady of Grace Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Dolores’ memory to one of the following charities: American Cancer Society, https://donate.cancer.org, St Jude’s https://www.stjude.org or RIP Medical Debt https://ripmedicaldebt.org.

Mae Ruth Hoch, (nee Jensen), passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren on January 18th, 2023. She was 90 years old.

Mae was born and raised in Philadelphia. She graduated from Simon Gratz High School in 1950 as a member of the National Honor Society. She worked at Technical Services Corporation, Keystone Automobile Club (AAA), and Greenspan Lighting before becoming a homemaker and Mom. She met her husband of nearly 68 years, Joseph Howard Hoch, when she was 15. She started writing to him while he was in the Navy, and they were married on Valentine’s Day, 1953. Together, Mae and Howard were blessed with 8 children. Mae was an industrious homemaker taking in sewing and baking custom cakes to supplement the family income. A talented seamstress with an eye for style, Mae sewed clothing for herself and her children, even formal wear for her children’s proms and weddings.

Mae was a woman of devout faith and had a servant’s heart. She played an active role in St. Joachim’s Parish, participating in the PTA, fundraising, Eucharistic Ministry, CCD, lectoring, Pre Cana, and Marriage Encounter, and as a den mother for Boy Scout Troop 378.

She established the family business, Howard’s Caterers, along with her husband, in the Frankford section of Philadelphia, in 1970. They grew Howard’s Caterers from a single lunch truck into a thriving catering business, beginning with all off-premises locations until establishing a home base at the Eddington Room in Bensalem, PA. While Howard wooed the clients and ran the kitchen, Mae directed all the day-to-day business operations. Mae never shied away from a challenge. When the catering hall opened, Mae learned how to make elaborate wedding cakes to include in the client package. When computers became available in the early 1980s, she took night classes and learned how to automate the bookkeeping and payroll for the business. Mae and Howard considered catering events on the yacht Imperatore for APA Transportation Corporation as their pinnacle of professional achievement.

Mae was preceded in death by her beloved husband Howard, son Joseph, and grandson Bryan. Mae is survived by her sister Joan (Cunningham) and her children: Stephen (Susan), Michael (Rochelle), Beth Anne (Robert Nice), Regina (Jim Stevenson), Mary (Moreton), Joan (Paul Kinniry), and Susanne (Matthew Bentley). Mae is also survived by her grandchildren: Christopher, Jennifer, Joann, Michael, Jessica, Larissa, Michelle, Andrew, Harrison, and Daniel, her great-grandchildren: Steven, Nox, Brayden, Juliette, Logan, Kyana, Armando Jr., Mae, and great great- grandchild: McKenna.

Mae will always be remembered by all who knew and loved her as an Amazing Woman.

Services will be held at St. Joachim’s Church on February 4, 2023. A visitation with the family will begin at 9:00 am followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 am. Interment will be family only.

Haydee Munoz-Ortiz

On the morning of Sunday, October 16th, after a short and aggressive battle with cancer, Haydee Munoz-Ortiz, 85, of Sebring Florida rose to her place in Heaven. She left this world surrounded by and holding the hands of her beloved children and grandchildren.

Born on May 12th 1937 to Verena Montalvo and Antonio Centeno in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Haydee spent her childhood and early teen years there, on the Isla de Encanto. (Island of Enchantment). She later moved to Philadelphia and graduated from Hallahan, Catholic Girl's High School in 1954. In the years that followed, Haydee married Ricardo Muñoz-Ortiz and had three children, Richard Muñoz-Ortiz, Mary "Liza" Rodriguez, and Michael Muñoz-Ortiz. After the death of her husband, Haydee worked tirelessly to provide for and raise her three young children. For many years, she cared for her eldest son Ritchie, who suffered health problems from which he passed in 1994. She simultaneously watched over and supported her mother, Verena, until her passing a year later in 1995. In the years during and since, she lead a life based on hard work, friendship, and family. She will be remembered most by her sisters, extended family, and friends for her sharp sense of humor and her ability to laugh during even the most difficult of times. Haydee's happiest years were spent helping to raise and in the company of her devoted grandchildren; Brandon Sarzynski, Deanna Elston, and Gabrielle Muñoz-Ortiz. She separately claimed all three were her favorite and routinely swore each to secrecy. Known lovingly as Tita to her grandchildren and four great grandchildren–– Evan Elston, Lexie Elston, Verena Sarzynski, and Landon Elston––Haydee remained fiercely committed to her family up to and including the day of her passing.

Haydee loved dogs and raised numerous gentle canines during her lifetime. She leaves behind her cherished dog Chiki, who has been adopted by family.

Haydee is survived by her dearest sisters Lydia Centeno Torres and Lucy Centeno O'Leary, along with her loving daughter Liza and son Michael, her three grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She loved and cared for her family fiercely, and tried to protect them, and because of that they loved and will always love her with all of their hearts.

Haydee is preceded in death by her Father, Mother, Son, and brother Ralph Centeno along with numerous furry companions who await her in Heaven.

Although Haydee moved to Florida years ago, she will be laid to rest, as was her wish, beside her much loved son Ritchie at New Cathedral Cemetery in Philadelphia.

HOCH

Joseph Howard Hoch, known to friends and loved ones as Howard, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren on January 9th, 2021. He was 88 years old. Howard was born in Philadelphia and joined the US Navy at the age of 18. Beginning his naval career as a coxswain, he eventually became a cook, sparking a lifelong passion. Howard was known to say as a navy man, he’d “rather peel potatoes than steer a ship.” While in the Navy, Howard began writing letters to his future wife, Mae (nee Jensen). Howard was employed in many areas over the course of his life before finding his true calling. He worked as a milkman, as an employee for the Container Corporation, and for King’s Caterers. He went after his dream and founded his own family business, Howard’s Caterers, in the Frankford section of Philadelphia, in 1970. Howard was a self-starter, and he led others by his example. Along with his wife, and business partner Mae, he grew Howard’s Caterers from a single lunch truck into a thriving catering business from the Eddington Room in Bensalem, PA. One of the happiest people you’d ever meet, he was known for always having a smile. He wanted to pass that joy onto everyone he knew, a firm believer that you could always find success in your happiness. No stranger to a hard day’s work, Howard empowered his children and employees in pursuing their dreams, through higher education, hard work, and perseverance. He lived his faith by being present and generous with his time. He was one of the “helpers” Mr. Rogers encouraged us to look for in times of trouble, always there to lend a hand. He was an active member of his church (St. Joachim/ Philadelphia, PA, Espiritu Santo/ Safety Harbor, FL ), a Boy Scout Leader, a Grand Knight in Knights of Columbus, an avid traveler, a hopeless romantic, a dreamer, a doer, a fierce card player (you didn’t want to make a mistake if you were on his team, trust me!), a nature lover, a campfire expert, a story teller, a lover of Phillies baseball, and a man, ultimately, whose faith in God directed his daily path. Howard is survived by his loving wife, Mae (nee Jensen), and his children: Stephen, Michael, Beth Anne, Joseph, Regina, Mary, Joan, and Susanne, and his grandchildren: Christopher, Jennifer, Joann, Michael, Jessica, Larissa, Michelle, Andrew, Harrison, and Daniel as well as his 7 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents: Harry and Josephine, his siblings: Thomas, Catherine, George, William, Freddy, Edward, Raymond, Francis and John, and his grandson, Bryan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children’s Scholarship Fund Philadelphia: csfphiladelphia.org. Relatives and friends are invited to Howard’s Celebration of Life 9:00 A.M.
